This is the learning log of John Callaway (515809), photography student at the Open College of The Arts.
For the moment it relates to the module entitled “Photography 1: Expressing Your Vision” and will contain my assignments, coursework, research, and anything else that exercises my mind in relation to photography. It’s very much a work in progress.
Photography has been a constant companion for much of my life, albeit in a fairly untutored way. I tend to photograph things that interest me, and I gravitate quite a lot to black and white.
At different times I’ve embarked on more formal training but the day job kind of got in the way. I did however start a blog whilst on a course which is now several years ‘live’, and to which I add photographs which sometimes reflect what is currently exercising my mind.
The day job is as a social worker. I spent some 25 years working and managing alcohol and homeless services, but am currently working with people with learning disabilities. Marginalisation and exclusion are themes that tend to recur, and I guess inform some of what I try to portray.
But then I’m just as happy taking photographs of gigs…
